Outmake can hear you and answer out loud, in whichever chat you choose.
Where what you say is written down
On this Mac, by Apple’s speech recognition, in your Mac’s language. It is never sent to Apple’s servers instead: if your language isn’t on this Mac yet, Outmake says so out loud, and turning on Dictation in System Settings › Keyboard downloads it. Only if you choose OpenAI in Settings › Voice › Hears With does a recording go to OpenAI, and Outmake asks you first.
Talking
Choose Talk to This Chat from the Chat menu, or the microphone button, to start a voice conversation. While it's listening you can Mute the microphone without ending the call, and End Voice hangs up. Settings › Voice can also turn on a wake word, so saying its name starts a conversation without a click.
Reading aloud
Any reply can be read aloud: open its menu and choose Read Aloud, or use Read Last Reply Aloud from the Chat menu for the newest one. Stop Reading ends it early. Turn on Read replies aloud in Settings › Voice to have every typed reply spoken as it's written, in addition to anything you ask out loud, which is always answered out loud.
Music and headphones
With Audio Ducking in Settings › Voice, music and videos go quieter while you or Outmake are talking, and come back after a pause. Choose Low, Medium or High, or turn it off. It lowers other apps only, never Outmake’s own voice.
Opening a Bluetooth headset’s microphone switches it into call mode, which makes music sound worse. So while Outmake is only listening for its name, it uses your Mac’s own microphone, and your AirPods’ microphone opens once a conversation starts. With the lid closed, the Mac’s microphone is off, so the name isn’t listened for; click the notch instead. A microphone you pick in Settings › Voice is always used as picked.
Voices and their licenses
Settings › Voice › Voice picks which voice speaks. Every voice lives in Models › Voices, and every card there shows a license badge: Commercial use OK, Personal use only, or License not stated, so you know what you may do with a recording made in that voice before you download it. Outmake also has Speaking rate and, for typed replies streamed beside the notch, a separate Reading Pace.
Outmake doesn't offer voice cloning: it won't copy a voice from a recording you provide. Every voice it speaks with is one it already has a license for.
